names

Right now I’m on the couch with Damien – he’s napping in his faux-Boppy and I’m watching House Hunters. Today is one of our Home Alone days, when Dan is working and my parents/Kassi are in school, and this is actually the first time I’ve made it out to watch TV (don’t ask me how this works, but little things are surprisingly difficult when you have to accomplish them whilst carrying around a newborn.) (Which, eee, I have to mention that Damien is only considered a newborn until the end of the week. Crazy!)

So anyway, on to the title content: I found a website where you could track a name’s popularity over the last 100 years or so. I put Damien’s name in out of curiosity, then I realized you could add another name to compare them, so I added Damian.

I’m not sure if I’ve included the whole name story here, but here’s a recap: from the time we started dating Dan and I knew we liked the name Damien for a boy. After we got pregnant I bought a baby book and we went through the entire thing, only to discover… we couldn’t really agree on a name other than Damien. Well, that was easy, right? That’s what we assumed, until we realized we were having a little misunderstanding – Dan assumed the spelling was DamiAn, and I liked DamiEn. (Obviously I won lol, but only because I made a bunch of crafts with that spelling on it. Also probably because he was such a pickypants about the name choice that I deserved something easy…)

As it turns out both are valid spellings, but I was at least a little validated to discover their popularity isn’t THAT different:

Not sure if there's no information on the 2000's, or if this is just a really unpopular name these days...

Then I got curious and decided to look up the various forms of my name. Laeci, of course, didn’t exist, but here are the rest of ‘em:

Funny that the closest to my name is the least common...

So apparently my name was popular in the ’70′s but not really at any other time… lol. Oh well, I like having a unique name. :)

random Thanksgiving post

Hello world! Happy Thanksgiving! Granted, it’s after midnight now, but I haven’t gone to sleep yet but it still feels like Thanksgiving to me. In celebration of the holiday, here is me with a bunny ball:

Those are some 'sploring ears

Dan found a box of plushies in the garage that included this little guy. I really have no memory of buying him, but he’s pretty freaking cute, am I right? :)

Other things:

  • I’m 37 weeks pregnant today (technically yesterday; see opening paragraph) which means I’m officially full term – yay!
  • I have an ultrasound on Wednesday, which I’m excited about. Except that the reason I need the ultrasound is because baby looks big, which is not so exciting, especially for my nether regions. In all events, I’ll find out in a few days if Not-So-Little Baby will be born close to his due date or will be induced a bit sooner (unless I randomly go into labor, which could happen, but I’m not betting on it.)
  • There is a jar of peanut butter behind me in the photo. What; you don’t have jars of peanut butter on your bookshelves? (This is Dan’s Special Peanut Butter and he likes to make sure it’s always available, lol.)

haircut update

I wrote about my accidental mom haircut here. Actually, it’s growing on me (haha literally but that’s not what I meant… shut up.)

Anyway, I was amused to find a sequel to the previously-posted Anxiety Cat that perfectly describes my situation. Oh, Anxiety Cat, you know me so well…

(p.s. My college experience, right here… which is why, sadly, it’s not yet over.)

Check out those awesome stats... lol. And that's just on this computer!

everyone wants my pregnancy pillow

My beloved pregnancy pillow arrived in the mail two days ago. It’s a Sleeper Keeper Mini by Leachco, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

Everyone else seems to love it, too. When I took it out of the box and commenced the snugglefest, Dan admitted that he wished he had one too! (I told him I’d look for a “manly pregnancy pillow”, but he decided he’d deal with regular old pillows.)

Sadly, all snugglefests must come to an end. And as soon as I relinquished my precious, it was immediately usurped by furry invaders:

Leo paid our bed a visit, and he thought the pillow made a nice burrow.

Leo looks like a gremlin, lol!

Ripley soon staked her claim on the pillow, and proceeded to try every conceivable sleeping position with her new Doggy Nest:

No photographsy please; can't you see I'm trying to sleep?

Uh oh, someone's got a case of the sads!

Just loungin' around - like how my collar matches MY pillow?

Oh, did you want your pillow back? Sorry, it's mine now.

Even Bun-Bun had to get in a cuddle with the pillow of amazingness:

Plushies need cuddles, too!

It’s only a matter of time before the remaining rabbit, two cats, and two other dogs decide to get in on the action. I may never get a turn with my pillow again!

(crossposted to baby blog and My Little Cutelets, because I had to share the adorable!) :)

goals for the next six months

Fun fact: humans spend about forty weeks gestating a mini-human, meaning pregnancy lasts ten months, not the commonly-believed nine. Right now, I am four months pregnant (actually closer to four months, one week, to be technical), so I have about six months (er, five months three weeks) to go.

I have a whole lot of crap to get accomplished in those six months… and I mean a LOT.

So, here are a few of my goals for the upcoming summer and fall:

  • Get into our own apartment

This is one we’ve been working on… well, pretty much since we moved in with my parents. A year ago. And yet we’re still here, because Dan and I can’t seem to be employed at the same time. Hopefully that will change soon, but since I’m never counting on us being overly wealthy, we’re looking into low-income housing at the moment. We’ve applied for several programs in our community, but the waiting lists are loooong, so if we want to be in our own place by December (my goal is actually September, but we’ll see) we’re going to have to do some looking and applying on our own as well.

Our housing requirements include: 1-2 bedroom (two is obviously preferred), parking for two cars, and (hardest of all) pets allowed. Just because we’re adding a new family member doesn’t mean we’re ditching the old ones. I will NOT be giving up my furchildren, and if that makes the home search that much harder, so be it. We’d also love to find a place with good storage, some kind of outdoor space (balcony, yard, porch, etc), a dishwasher, air conditioning, parks/playground nearby, and ensuite laundry (okay this is stretching it, but I can dream, can’t I? Even just hookups would be okay, since we could probably get ahold of a used washer and dryer from family.) Oh, and that extra bedroom. I love kids, but I’d still rather not share a room with a toddler.

  • Teach Ripley some manners (and basic training)

So, we’ve had Ripley for nearly a year now, and she has definitely made progress. She’s heartworm-free, spayed, housetrained, and sweet and loving as can be (okay, we didn’t teach her that, but it’s still nice!) She also walks well on a leash, gets along with dogs, cats, and kids, and is under fairly reliable vocal command when off-leash. Unfortunately, that’s where her training ends. Her only command (other than “come”) is “sit”, and if she’s super excited she’ll forget that one.

My goals for Ripley (another set of goals inside my goal list!) are for her to sit consistently, to “lay down” and “stay” on command, and to stop nosing/pawing us when we’re not paying attention to her (the laptop is often the brunt of her frustration!) I’d also like to teach her to walk calmly alongside a stroller, and to not jump into a lap without permission – especially if that lap is full of baby. Finally, I’m working on teaching her “gentle”, which basically translates to “calm the hell down, dog!”

Ripley is very smart, and both food and attention-motivated, so as long as we’re persistent and patient I’m sure she can be trained. I just need to get all other family members to help and not hinder me…

  • Go through the PILES AND PILES OF CRAP in the garage

When we moved out of our apartment in the Bay Area, it was hasty. Getting everything into the garage once we were here was even hastier (all the boxes were in the driveway, Dan and I were home alone, and it was about to rain.) As a result, I have no freaking idea where the majority of my stuff is, not to mention how well the boxes were packed in the first place.

This probably won’t get done until we find a new place to live, but when that happens, I don’t want to just move all my crap over there. I’d really like to go through my stuff, get it reorganized, and only keep the things that we need, want, and are going to use. I hate clutter (Hoarders gives me nightmares!), and I don’t want to start life in a new place stuck in the middle of it!

  • Get on a workable budget, and stick to it!

I’ve been recording my receipts for years, and (more or less) keeping a budget to go with it. And when I say “keeping”, what I mean is “keeping TRACK of”, not “keeping my spending within that budget”… oops. Recently I’ve made a budget that I’m going to work really, really hard to stick to. It’s a big priority for Dan and me to be able to pay rent, and we’re willing to give up a lot to do so. We’re also going to have all new places for our money to disappear to in the next few months, and we need to budget for that. We no longer have Dan’s college fund to fall back on (it did it’s job, getting him through his college years, but it’s still a little scary) so we have to be that much more careful. Not to mention, we are in several exciting varieties of debt (namely college loans and medical bills; luckily neither of us are too crazy with credit cards.)

In all events, if we ever want to be successful and totally on our own, we need to be better with money, and this is a step in the right direction.

  • Be as healthy as I can for the rest of this pregnancy

This includes: doing everything recommended by my doctors, even if it requires millions of appointment (which it seems to…) and shelling out cash, exercising when it’s a gazillion degrees outside, eating non-carb food even when it sounds disgusting, taking my giant horse pills every day (though this seems like the easiest thing on the list, it’s actually something I have a really hard time remembering), and trying my very very hardest to stay positive and not stress out over little things, so I can provide a positive environment for my baby.

  • Find some additional source of income for the next few months

This is kind of self-explanatory, but also frustratingly confusing. I know I don’t want to work full-time with an infant, but I do need to work somewhere. I feel confident I could do the work I’ve been doing with a baby in tow… but I don’t know if that’s even a valid option. (I know I can substitute teach, but there’s no predicting whether there will be funds for the tutoring center or not.) I’ve thought about a few other things (petsitting, temporary employment agencies, a more permanent part-time job… I just don’t know.)

(in progress… will probably be updated later!)

stressful things

Lately I’ve been surrounded by Stressful Things. I’m trying to roll with it and take things as they come – bendy not breaky, that kind of thing – and I’m doing a pretty good job so far, I think. Or maybe that’s the Celexa talking. Either way, as long as I avoid Major Freakout I’m okay.

One of the Stressful Things (not the most stressful, but pretty upsetting) is my laptop. Namely, it’s inability to function for more than 24 hours at a time. When I turn it off, there’s a 50/50 chance that it’s going to work again when I turn it back on. Sometimes it’ll turn on and immediately freeze. One time I turned it on and my screen looked like Windows 95 – all sharp edges and boxes. Another time it somehow deleted EVERYTHING in my Photos and Documents folder (which was okay, since I have everything on my external hard drive, but still. Weird.) I’ve restored my computer to the beginning of the month (the earliest date I have) more times than I can count in the past week or two.

I’ve kind of resigned myself to my computer’s eventual death, but I don’t like it. I really love this laptop, despite its many problems. The screen’s the perfect size (ie a bit longer than normal), the keyboard is set up perfectly and is more solid than the crappy-ass keyboards they have on laptops now, and the mouse area is smooth (Dan’s is bumpy, which is annoying) and the perfect sensitivity. I would rather pay a few hundred to fix my laptop than get a brand new computer… unless the brand new one was exactly the same, that is. (I have a Compaq, and though Best Buy doesn’t carry them I think they’ll order you one… at least, I heard that at one point.)

Anywho. This is really low on my worries list in the grand scheme of things, but I will feel much better about Life In General if my computer stops acting up.

inside my purse

I’ve seen this done before, and I was bored at work today (no one was there!), so I decided to share What’s Inside My Purse.

Cell phone pic

First, the purse (the purple plaid thing that is folded in half in the back left corner) with buttons

Inside (clockwise)
My awesome purple Contigo water bottle, which is empty because I’m sick and drink a lot of water

Purple Five Star notebook (to write random stuff down)
Carol O’Connell, “Bone By Bone” (the novel I’m currently reading)
Random Target receipt
Red Silly Putty (well, the egg is red; the putty is actually orange)
Black lipstick case with Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer (Shade: Cocoa) (LOVE this stuff) & Softlips Pearl

Emergency tampon
Hand sanitizer
Orbit bubblemint gum (my favorite!)
Blue cloth grocery bag
Random escaped dime
My keys, which include:

  • Thailand keychain/nail clippers (lol, so multifunctional!) from exchange student Pat
  • Fake Tamagotchi-esque keychain that used to have candy and is now full of emergency pills (Zyrtec, Celexa, Advil) (Dan found this in his childhood room and gave it to me. It says ‘Uh Oh’ on it, which is pretty funny – uh oh, someone’s freaking out! Time for meds!)
  • Loungefly skull keychain
  • Flip flop keychain which says “I <3 Daniel”
  • Mini cards to: GameStop, Petco, Borders, Petsmart, Hot Topic, Office Depot, RiteAid, CVS, Bank of America (it’s actually a tiny ATM card; you can swipe it)
  • Keys to my Honda, my parents’ minivan, my parents’ house, Marcia’s house, my bike lock, and a mysterious small key that probably went to a mailbox at some point

My wallet, which in turn is full of:

  • Driver’s license

  • State of CA green card (which basically gives me free birth control & gynecological care)
  • California insurance card for my Honda
  • Penn Foster & PUC student ID
  • Checkbook (which I practically never use)
  • A little book of photos
  • $6 cash and 54 cents change (most of it pennies)

Hello Kitty DS case, with:

Not shown:
My cell phone, which I used to take the picture

Mine looks pretty much exactly like this

My school keys (I was at school when I took this, and they were in my pocket)

I <3 this keychain :) Thought it was appropriate for a tutoring center!

faces of loss, faces of hope

Faces of Loss, Faces of Hope is a website that is working to literally put a face to pregnancy and infant loss, and to remove the stigma of talking about it. On the About page, founder Kristin says:

I hope that by telling the world we are not afraid to show our faces and tell our stories, barriers will be broken down. Taboos will be broken, and lines of communication will be opened.

I definitely think that is a worthy goal. I’m frustrated at how the center of your life can be taken from you, and yet you’re not supposed to talk about it and get the support you need. I hate how people recommend not to tell anyone about your pregnancy until the second trimester “in case something happens”, when for those 10+ weeks you ARE pregnant and totally in love with your baby, and with the loss of that you’re absolutely crushed… and alone.

I submitted my story. You can read it here.

(In my story I link to my loss blog, where I’m a lot more open with my feelings. If you do make your way over there, please be understanding of the fact that I am still grieving. I really appreciate it.)
